Carlos Belmonte elected IBRO President

1/1/2008

Carlos Belmonte

Professor Carlos Belmonte, former IBRO Secretary-General from 1998 to 2001, has been elected President of IBRO, his term beginning January 1, 2008. Professor Belmonte won by a clear majority in a contest where 59 per cent of the Governing Council cast their votes.

Carlos Belmonte is Professor of Physiology (since 1973) and Director of the Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante, Spain, where his research interests include the areas of sensory transduction and signalling in primary sensory neurons; trophic interactions between sensory neurons and target organs; and functional roles of the sensory and autonomic innervation of the eye

In 2002, he was appointed member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences (La Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicas y Naturales) in recognition of his outstanding scientific career.

While he was Secretary-General of IBRO, Carlos Belmonte initiated many changes within IBRO during what was a critical period of development in the organization's framework and programmes. IBRO designated six Regions based on geographical, social and economic criteria. Each Region was to have a Regional Committee, which would establish its own priorities and receive a modest annual budget from IBRO to be used for the organization of activities in that area. Those Regions were, and remain, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, US/Canada, and Western Europe. To this day, the Regions flourish, each organizing their own schools, workshops and conferences. In this way Carlos Belmonte was able to focus on the ever-increasing demand of students' needs around the world.
