Science Advisory Board

Mission

The aim of the IBRO Science Advisory Programme (ISAP) is to assist institutions wishing to evaluate scientific and teaching activities held in their own departments or institutes of Neuroscience. Institutions from any country may apply. When asked, IBRO will use its regional and international resources to help create competent and impartial Scientific Advisory Boards (SABs), which can provide expert advice in the form of outside reviewers or site-visiting teams. To ensure the effectiveness of this programme, IBRO may partner with regional organizations (such as FENS in Europe) and national member societies.

Upon receiving a request for assistance from a neuroscience institution, ISAP will, in consultation with the sponsoring institution, suggest and help recruit the Scientific Advisory Board members. These scientists should be highly respected and experienced investigators from a spectrum of disciplines relevant to those of the institution being reviewed.

Applications to ISAP can be addressed at any time but must be made at least six months in advance of the proposed date of the review. Once an initial request has been made and accepted by ISAP, the institution will be asked to provide:

Basic information on the institute or department to be reviewed.

A short description of the mandate given by the institution to the review committee, as well as the name and address of the authority locally responsible for the review. This person will be in charge of communications between ISAP, the designated SAB and the institution being reviewed.

Information on the principal investigators to be evaluated (e.g. CVs, publications, funding, space, annual budget, grants received, co-operation with other scientists, training programmes, main areas of research, and future research plans.) The precise components and format of such materials will be decided by agreement between ISAP and the institution requesting the review.

Expenses related to travel and lodging will be the responsibility of the institution being reviewed. Under special circumstances IBRO may seek arrangements that will help defray the costs of reviews that are critical to the development of neuroscience in promising institutions.

The institutions reviewed by ISAP and the members of the ISAP review team will be listed on the IBRO web site.
